Why Brokers Get Away With Not Paying Detention

Many carriers don’t bother filing for detention because:

  1. The paperwork is tedious — You need arrival/departure times, signatures, and proof of wait.

  2. Brokers deny claims — “Our records show you arrived late” or “We don’t pay detention at that location.”

  3. It’s too small to fight over — One hour here, two hours there. Carriers give up.

  4. Fear of retaliation — “If you ask for detention, we won’t give you future loads.”

This is exactly why detention continues to be a massive, unaddressed problem in the industry. Brokers know many carriers won’t push back.
